Our Cohesion Work
At the heart of /together’s mission is a simple belief: that a kinder, more connected Britain is both possible and necessary. Yet across the country, that sense of “us” is under pressure. Loneliness is rising, trust is fraying, and too many people feel cut off from one another and from the institutions that once brought us together.
Our cohesion work exists to confront this challenge head-on – mobilising our broad coalition of national and local partners to strengthen the ties that hold us together and ensure every community feels seen, safe and supported.
We bring together campaigning, policy and convening expertise to do three things: monitor risks to cohesion, deepen understanding of what’s driving them, and coordinate responses when connection is under strain.
Monitoring Risks to Cohesion
We convene partners from government, civil society and business to identify where pressures on cohesion are emerging – from flashpoints in community relations to longer-term drivers of disconnection.
By bringing together data, local intelligence and insight from across sectors, we are helping to build a shared early-warning picture of the health of community life in Britain. This enables earlier, better-coordinated action when tensions begin to rise – supporting institutions and communities to anticipate, not just react to, division.
Enhancing Understanding
Through the Independent Commission on Community & Cohesion, we are deepening the national understanding of what drives connection and division – and why it matters.
The Commission is gathering evidence from across the country to build the most comprehensive picture yet of the state of cohesion and to develop a shared vision for how we live well together. Its work provides the long-term evidence base that underpins all of our cohesion efforts – ensuring future responses are grounded in what people say, not just what politics demands.
Responding to Ongoing and Emerging Risks
When moments of tension or crisis arise, we work with partners to promote unity – helping communities respond in ways that build connection rather than deepen divides.
We coordinate cross-sector partners to share intelligence, align messaging and support local resilience – from rapid-response communications and solidarity events to community-led initiatives that demonstrate cooperation across difference.
/together
Together, these strands form the backbone of a coordinated national effort to strengthen Britain’s social fabric – combining early warning, shared understanding, and collective action to ensure our communities stay resilient in the face of division.
